What differentiates CBD from THC?

Cannabis, or hemp, is an angiosperm plant belonging to the Cannabaceae family and consists of several elements, among which are the so-called cannabinoid substances namely THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) and CBD (cannabidiol). THC is the psychoactive element that causes sensations of euphoria, relaxation, and spatiotemporal perception in the user, and within the body, it binds to CB1 receptors, the stimulation of which accounts for the euphoric effects of cannabinoids, but also for their antiemetic, antioxidant, hypotensive, immunosuppressive, anti-inflammatory, analgesic, antispasmodic, and appetite-stimulating.

CBD, on the other hand, is a nonpsychoactive cannabinoid and acts in the opposite way, in that it binds to CB2 receptors, which are found on T cells of the immune system and at the level of the central nervous system. Stimulation of CB2 receptors seems to be mainly responsible for the anti - inflammatory and immunomodulatory action of cannabinoids. Simply put, then, THC alters the mind, while CBD stimulates healing, enabling treatment of anxiety, psychosis, memory lapses, and disorders such as epilepsy and schizophrenia.

What is the best way to take CBD?

Different types of hemp oil and CBD products can be found on the market, obtained depending on the extraction technique used. It is important to note that the starting plant material used to produce CBD extracts belongs to cannabis varieties allowed for cultivation for industrial use.

These extracts, from which THC is removed, are then monitored to assess both their qualitative and quantitative aspects of cannabinoids and their microbiological characteristics. Among the various products on the market are:

  • CBD oil

CBD oil is available in various concentrations, and its strong point is its versatility of use.

To obtain CBD oil, the extract is diluted with hemp seed oil. It can be taken sublingually, added to the foods and drinks we consume daily, or ingested in capsule form. The effects of CBD oil are felt more quickly when it is taken sublingually. This intake technique ensures very precise and consistent dosages and allows the desired effects to be achieved in an extremely short time (5 to 20 minutes), as CBD is directly absorbed by the bloodstream in the sublingual tissue.

Gel capsules are the alternative to oil that avoids bad taste and waste or overdose, each capsule having a standard CBD content. Compared with the sublingual technique, capsule ingestion takes a few minutes longer to take effect.

  • E-liquid

CBD can be taken as a liquid inside an electronic cigarette. Inhaling vapor allows you to avoid the dangers associated with smoking and combustion processes and is an effective way to quickly absorb cannabinoids, the effects of which are almost instantaneous. In this way, more relaxation can be achieved almost immediately, and pain-related symptoms are drastically reduced.

  • CBD Crystals

Crystals are the purest form of CBD; to obtain them, CBD extracts undergo various processing and refining steps, which gradually lead to greater purity in the final product. Once the 80% purity threshold of CBD within the extract is exceeded, it begins to crystallize. The refining process continues until everything other than pure cannabidiol is removed, resulting in a final extract that is 99 percent pure and above.

  • Topicals and cosmetics

The use of topical CBD products is indicated for people suffering from painful and/or chronic conditions such as arthritis. They can be found in the form of ointments, balms or lotions and are directly applied to affected areas to provide pain relief and reduce inflammation. In addition, CBD is also increasingly used in cosmetics, creams, balms and after-sun ointments becoming even more effective due to CBD's adjuvant power in the action of the other nutrients in the product.

Benefits:

More and more studies are confirming the effectiveness of CBD in treating a variety of health problems. This cannabinoid is proving effective as a first-choice drug for a wide range of conditions, diseases and disorders, such as seizures, muscle spasms, anxiety, nausea, chronic pain, inflammation, insomnia and more.

The main properties of CBD:

  • Antiepileptic and antispasmodic

CBD oil is becoming the first choice for those suffering from seizure-inducing conditions, particularly for people taking antiepileptic drugs. CBD, due to its anticonvulsant action, provides valuable support in therapies for childhood epilepsy, such as that caused by Dravet syndrome.

  • Anxiolytic and antipsychotic

CBD significantly reduces two major forms of anxiety, namely obsessive compulsive disorder and posttraumatic anxiety disorder. It is particularly effective as an antipsychotic and as a remedy for anxiety and stress and is increasingly being used to combat insomnia and depression.

  • Analgesic

CBD products are able to quickly reduce nausea and have a high degree of digestibility, stimulate appetite and relieve pain, which is why they are, also, effectively used as an adjuvant in cancer therapies and as support in the treatment of HIV. They have a relaxing and sedative effect, reduce inflammation and tension, and are able to alleviate the painful symptoms associated with various diseases; they are also excellent allies in combating asthma and controlling diabetes and blood sugar.

  • Anti-inflammatory and antioxidant

CBD, thanks to its anti-inflammatory properties, is a valuable aid in the treatment of skin conditions such as psoriasis, helps treat acne, and moisturizes and softens the skin thanks to its essential fatty acids. In addition, thanks to antioxidants that fight free radicals, it has an important anti-aging function and protects the brain from possible neurodegenerative diseases.

Side effects

CBD has no particular side effects, however, it should not be considered an alternative to traditional medicine and you should always seek medical advice before using it as a supplement. The most common side effect when taking CBD is drowsiness; avoid getting behind the wheel or using heavy machinery during the initial period of intake.
